Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt worked during the night shift as nurse, so she could pursue her love for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the garbage from one of the juries. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. She also started several lifestyles and promotions networks like Urban Beauty Collective.
